After years of helping people get organized at home, mainly with papers, I retired from professional organizing.
What I loved about that profession was helping people, and I still want to do that.
I realized when I was helping clients organize their papers, ensuring their important legal documents were accessible, I rarely found a life information document—a list of everything their family would need to know when they die or if they become incapacitated. I also discovered that 90% of the time, only one spouse handled the finances, and the other spouse knew little about it.
Being single and getting older, I created a Life Information Document for myself a few years ago. It tells my family what my income sources are and what bills to pay. Also the location of important documents and passwords, the key people in my life, information about my house, etc.
As I spoke about this to clients, colleagues, and friends, many of them said “I need something like that.”
As I refined my own list, adding to it, and putting it in a format that’s easy to update, I realized I could provide this as a template for others to use to make it as easy as possible to complete.
The other way I love helping people is to create their Home Inventory. Maybe you know someone who lost everything in a home fire, or your family had to evacuate because of a hurricane, not knowing if there’d be anything left when you were able to return home.
Doing this before a disaster will make your life so much easier if that ever happens to you.
My clients have loved the peace of mind they get when these documents are complete. I feel the same way about mine. And I think you would too.
